Today, there are close to 300 recordings preserved on wax cylinders, dating from the years 1913-1915. The majority of the wax cylinders are accessible at Svenskt visarkiv (The Centre for Swedish Folk Music and Jazz Research), Musikverket, whilst around a dozen are held at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sprakochfolkminnen.se\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institutet f\u00f6r spr\u00e5k och folkminnen\u00a0<\/a>(The Institute for Language and Folklore).<\/p>\n<\/external-link-icon><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"w-constrained richtext\"><external-link-icon>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/katalog.visarkiv.se\/lib\/views\/kt\/Default.aspx?item=112#_ga=1.229300063.2111241956.1461834610\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Catalogue of Karl Tir\u00e9n\u2019s recordings<\/a><\/p>\n<\/external-link-icon><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"w-constrained richtext\"><external-link-icon>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Over 100 yoikers participated<\/h2>\n<\/external-link-icon><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"w-constrained richtext\"><external-link-icon>\n<p>Around 100 men and women, aged 9 to 77 years, participate on the phonograph cylinders identified as Tir\u00e9n\u2019s recordings \u2013 although several of the cylinders have unfortunately broken over the years. The phonograph recordings contain mostly yoik, but there are also examples of Sami narrative, dramatized dialogues during courtship, the playing of the\u00a0<em>fadno<\/em>\u00a0(a wind instrument made from angelica, and a distant relative to the oboe) and Finnish songs.<\/p>\n<\/external-link-icon><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"w-constrained richtext\"><external-link-icon>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/katalog.visarkiv.se\/lib\/views\/kt\/Default.aspx?item=270\">See a list over those involved<\/a><\/p>\n<\/external-link-icon><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"w-constrained richtext\"><external-link-icon>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About the Sami joik<\/h2>\n<\/external-link-icon><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"w-constrained richtext\"><external-link-icon>\n<p>The yoik is a particular way of voice usage, which was developed by the Sami people. In the beginning of the 20<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century the Sami descendant Kristoffer Sjulsson described yoik this way: \u201c[in yoik] the singers express, through the melody, their perception of a person\u2019s or object\u2019s properties, and even their own feelings towards what they are singing about, or the memories which animate the mind at the remembrance of a person or object\u201d. Sjulsson\u2019s description, frames the yoik\u2019s traditional core: a social form of communication in which the impressions of people, animals and places \u2013 and the relationships between these \u2013 are portrayed in music and text.<\/p>\n<\/external-link-icon><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"w-constrained richtext\"><external-link-icon>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/svensktvisarkiv.se\/en\/sami-voices\/sami-joik\/\">Read more about yoik<\/a><\/p>\n<\/external-link-icon><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"w-constrained richtext\"><external-link-icon>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Listen to the recordings<\/h2>\n<\/external-link-icon><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"w-constrained richtext\"><external-link-icon>\n<p>More than one hundred years have passed since Karl Tir\u00e9n brought his phonograph to the winter markets in Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur. Now his recordings are made available on the internet. The organisations behind the publishing project are Svenskt visarkiv\/Statens musikverk in cooperation with&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sprakochfolkminnen.se\/\">Institute for Language and Folklore<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ajtte.com\/\">\u00c1jtte Museum<\/a>&nbsp;in Jokkmokk. Selections of the recordings have already been released on the CD&nbsp;<em>Samiska r\u00f6ster,&nbsp;<\/em>Svea Fonogram (2003).&#8217;<\/p>\n<\/external-link-icon><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"w-constrained richtext\"><external-link-icon>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/katalog.visarkiv.se\/lib\/views\/kt\/HitList.aspx?ccl=find+XRFRITEXT+%22\">Listen to the recordnings<\/a><\/p>\n<\/external-link-icon><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"w-constrained richtext\"><external-link-icon>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The documentation project<\/h2>\n<\/external-link-icon><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"w-constrained richtext\"><external-link-icon>\n<p>Initially Karl Tir\u00e9n documented the songs in written transcriptions, but from 1913 he also got the opportunity to make sound recordings using contemporary portable audio recording technology: a phonograph with wax cylinders.
