The first trip<\/h2>\n<\/external-link-icon><\/div>\n\n

The goal of the first collecting trip was the winter markets in Arvidsjaur and Arjeplog in February 1913. In July 1913, Tir\u00e9n made a collecting trip in which he first made phonograph recordings \u2013 mostly in T\u00e4rnaby in connection with a so-called b\u00f6ndagshelg<\/em>, a church festival, and then continued by making notations on paper by ear.<\/p>\n<\/external-link-icon><\/div>\n\n

In January 1914, Tir\u00e9n visited the winter markets in Lycksele and \u00c5sele to continue his recording operations. The summer of 1914 resulted in recordings from a trip to Jokkmokk and Kvikkjokk in late June, and recordings in July, in connection with governor Walter Murray\u2019s meetings in various locations with reindeer herders. Tir\u00e9n\u2019s last field recordings with the phonograph were made in October 1915, in connection with being invited as a guest when Maria Persson-Johansson, Tir\u00e9n\u2019s most important contact among yoikers, was married.<\/p>\n<\/external-link-icon><\/div>\n\n

Karl Tir\u00e9n made his first phonograph recordings at the winter market in Arvidsjaur 1913, on 8th<\/sup>\u00a0\u2013 9th<\/sup>\u00a0February. There, he documented 13 joikers. Tir\u00e9n then continued to Arjeplog, where a market was also to be held. Prior to this trip, he had contacted Maria Persson, who permitted Tir\u00e9n to make recordings in her home, where she invited friends and family to yoik.<\/p>\n<\/external-link-icon><\/div>\n\n

In Arvidsjaur, Tir\u00e9n had become familiar with the writer and folklore expert Karl-Erik Forsslund (1872\u20131941). The latter participated in Tir\u00e9n\u2019s recording work in Arjeplog and wrote a long article, N\u00e4r lapparna joika<\/em>, about his impressions. The article was published in the national newspaper Dagens Nyheter on 2nd<\/sup> March 1913.<\/p>\n<\/external-link-icon><\/div>\n\n

In the article Forsslund makes small mini-portraits of several of the yoikers who were present, and he also describes how the recording work was carried out, which makes the article worth reading and justifies making it available in this context.<\/p>\n<\/external-link-icon><\/div>\n\n

Forslund\u2019s text is otherwise a mixture of romantic exoticism about Sami life and culture, whilst attempting to explain and defend the yoik, as a highly evolved form of music \u2013 something that was a basis for Karl Tir\u00e9n\u2019s work with Sami music.<\/p>\n<\/external-link-icon><\/div>\n\n
